Aside from the Academy Award, she has won a Grammy Award , five special Golden Globes , a BAFTA Award , a Laurel Award , the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival , the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival , and the Honorary Academy Award in 1991. In 1995, she received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievements, one of many such awards. In 1950, she entered a beauty contest and was noticed by film producer Carlo Ponti (1912-2007) who took her under his wing. With his help and guidance, she began appearing in bit parts in film , and got her first major role in director Vittorio De Sica's The Gold of Naples in 1954.

Married to producer Carlo Ponti for 50 years until his death in 2007, Loren lives in Geneva, Switzerland.
